International Fried Chicken Day is celebrated annually on July 6 to celebrate the food brought to the United States by Scottish and West African immigrants. Since then, fried chicken has become one of America’s favorite simple foods, and it’s interesting to know that Americans alone consume 8 billion chickens a year! To give you a clearer picture of this number, this number translates to 21,917,808 chickens per day, and the average American consumes about 36 kg of chicken per year!

History of fried chicken

Although there is often disagreement as to whether the fried chicken was brought to America by Scottish immigrants or West African immigrants; But the truth is that fried chicken is made from the combination of recipes of both groups of immigrants. Scottish settlers used to fry unflavored chicken in animal fat, but West African settlers used seasoned chicken and palm oil. Finally, in the American South, these two food traditions merged and what we know today as fried chicken was created. Before the invention of the refrigerator, frying chicken was a good way to keep chicken healthy. In other words, fried chicken has been able to “travel well” and this is one of the reasons why fried chicken has become so popular in all parts of the world.
